Boiler Street Soup Contest Requires Written Clarification: Steam Is Not an Ingredient

Judges have amended the rules after one competitor became too literal about local identity.

Boiler Street Soup Contest Requires Written Clarification: Steam Is Not an Ingredient

Boiler Street announced its autumn soup contest today. Entries may use vegetables, meat, grains, herbs and ordinary cooking methods. A handwritten question submitted to organisers asked whether municipal steam counts as a local ingredient.

The answer is no. Steam may heat approved cooking equipment but may not be collected from public lines, vents or engineering systems. One competitor argued that this removes “the soul of Boiler Street” from the competition. Judges suggested using onions instead.

The contest proceeds Saturday. City Engineering is pleased to be uninvolved and would like to remain that way. The Gazette plans to attend for entirely journalistic reasons involving bowls.
