The Ventorn Reading Room received a book today that was due back twenty-three years ago. The volume, A Short History of Canal Gates, was found in an attic by the borrower’s daughter while clearing old boxes.
The original borrower has died, and the family supplied the old loan slip still tucked inside. The librarian waived the theoretical fine after calculating that nobody had attempted to conceal the book and because the Reading Room stopped charging daily late fees seventeen years ago.
The book is in good condition and will return to the local history shelf after cleaning. The librarian says twenty-three years is not an acceptable borrowing period, but returning a book remains better than not returning it. Someone has already placed a reservation.
