City gardeners planted winter cabbages in three public beds near East Gate today. The planting is ordinary seasonal work using approved varieties and no experimental equipment.
During lunch, a child placed a small handwritten card beside one bed reading EXPERIMENTAL CABBAGES. The card attracted seven questions before a gardener noticed it. Two adults asked what made the cabbages experimental. One suggested unusual intelligence.
The card has been removed. All cabbages are standard cabbages. The gardeners have nevertheless kept the sign in the staff shed because, according to one worker, it has excellent lettering.
