The first light frost of the season covered East Gate roofs and garden beds this morning. Pavements remained mostly dry, but shaded stone steps were cold enough for Street Works to place a small caution barrier.
By midmorning, one brass handrail on the sunny side had warmed noticeably. Residents leaving the gate began touching it with both hands. Within minutes, a short informal queue formed. The rail was not designed as public heating but was not harmed.
Temperatures rose above freezing before noon. Street Works has removed the barrier and confirms the handrail may continue being touched in the ordinary manner. The city has no plan to advertise it as a seasonal service.
