Orwin Reed is a mechanic, repairman and practical engineer.
When a machine stops working, he does not blame bad luck. He looks at it, listens to it and, when necessary, opens it up to find out what actually happened.
His workshop may look crowded to everyone else, but Orwin seems to know where everything belongs. He knows which strange noises can safely be ignored and which ones mean that somebody should probably stop touching the machine immediately.
El spends a lot of time there, which gives Orwin another difficult job: encouraging the boy’s curiosity while trying to keep that curiosity connected to common sense.
Orwin is calm, practical and not easily impressed. He does not usually need a long speech to make his point.
Sometimes one look is enough.
