A public clock near East Market is under inspection after losing seven minutes on Monday and gaining nine on Tuesday. It is now approximately two minutes fast. A technician blames a worn regulator.
Market traders blame the clock for one late delivery, two early lunches and a customer who arrived before opening time and demanded compensation for waiting. The clock remains in service. A temporary sign beneath it reads: “TIME APPROXIMATE.” Someone has added in pencil: “VERY.”
The technician removed the addition. It returned. Personal appointments should not be set by the faulty display. The clockmaker says repairs will begin tomorrow. The clock is currently correct twice a day only if everybody agrees to stop asking difficult questions about what “correct” means.
