A routine safety inspection concluded ahead of schedule after an experimental machine answered a question nobody should have asked.

Workshop Inspection Ends Early After Machine Demonstrates Enough

A routine inspection in Workshop Alley ended twenty-three minutes early yesterday. The inspector had already checked boiler fittings, pressure gauges and emergency valves when he noticed a small experimental device on a side bench. “What does that do?” he asked. The owner replied, “It saves labour.” “What kind of labour?”

The machine unfolded by itself, crossed the bench, swept a tray of screws into a bucket and attempted to fold the inspector’s clipboard. Witnesses say the inspector maintained a professional expression throughout the demonstration, including the moment the machine reached for his clipboard. The owner considered this encouraging evidence that the device was becoming useful; the inspector considered it evidence that the inspection should continue from the doorway.

The remaining paperwork was completed outside. No injuries were reported. The workshop passed with two minor recommendations and one additional requirement: The experimental device must remain switched off during future official visits. The owner has accepted this condition. The machine has not been informed.
