A large wheel of cheese rolled away from a Copper Market stall this morning. The cheese travelled down Market Lane, overtook two handcarts and narrowly missed a stack of baskets. Its owner pursued it shouting: “Stop the cheese!” This was not effective.
The wheel finally struck the base of a public fountain and fell over. A Market Office worker arrived shortly afterwards. Asked whether the cheese had technically violated traffic rules, he said: “I refuse to answer that.” The cheese was returned to its stall.
It has been inspected and remains suitable for sale, although the owner has reduced the price of the outer edge. A wooden wedge now keeps the remaining wheels in place. The wedge is being watched carefully after recent events involving wedges.
