A faulty market scale has been removed after developing an unexpectedly loyal customer base.

Market Scale Gives Everyone Exactly One Pound Too Much and Becomes Very Popular

A weighing scale at Copper Market was removed from service after inspectors discovered it added exactly one pound to every measurement. A sack weighed eleven instead of ten. A basket weighed six instead of five. A small dog sat on the platform and was officially declared heavier than expected. The dog appeared proud.

The trader using the scale says he had noticed customers becoming unusually pleased with their purchases. The faulty scale became so popular that two customers joined the queue after being told it was wrong. One explained that he had no shopping to weigh but would like to know whether the machine could also make him feel taller.

Inspectors recalibrated the mechanism. Several customers asked whether the old setting could be retained “for morale.” It cannot. The repaired scale now displays correct weight. Business at the stall has returned to normal. The dog has refused a second measurement.
