A large prize turnip escaped from a produce cart near Bell Street this morning. The turnip rolled down a short ramp, crossed the pavement and struck the external linkage of a small public bell. The bell rang once. The time was 10:17.
Several residents stopped. One checked his watch. Another began eating lunch. The turnip’s owner recovered it immediately. Street Works inspected the bell and found no damage. The owner apologised and explained that the turnip was being taken to a size competition.
Officials have confirmed there is no rule specifically prohibiting vegetables from ringing public bells. There is now a strong possibility that such a rule will exist by tomorrow. The turnip has been entered into the competition. It is currently the favourite.
