City Engineering opened the October maintenance register this morning and received its first report seven minutes later. The complaint concerned a heavy service door on Lantern Court that gives a long, descending sigh whenever it closes. The resident who reported it supplied the street, nearest landmark and exact time, which officials praised as an excellent example of useful reporting.
An engineer inspected the hinges and found one dry bearing, two loose screws and no evidence that the door has feelings. This conclusion disappointed three neighbours who had already begun describing the sound as weary rather than mechanical. One insisted the door only sighs after difficult visitors leave.
The bearing has been oiled and the screws tightened. The door now closes with an ordinary clunk. Two residents say the courtyard feels less expressive. City Engineering says this is acceptable. The maintenance register remains open, and officials have asked that future reports continue to describe locations more precisely than “near that pipe.”
