Residents on Foundry Lane reported a large, nearly perfect smoke ring rising from a workshop chimney shortly after noon. The workshop owner says the ring resulted from a pressure change when a furnace door closed and was not part of any demonstration.
This explanation might have ended the matter if six people had not gathered to wait for another ring. Two apprentices then adjusted nothing at all while pretending to understand the phenomenon. A smaller, less impressive oval appeared twelve minutes later and received polite applause.
The furnace is operating normally and no fault has been found. The workshop has asked residents not to request scheduled smoke rings. One apprentice has nevertheless written “possibly Thursdays” on a scrap of paper. The owner has removed the scrap.
