Sunday Clock Cleaning Stops When Clockmaker Finds Someone’s Sandwich Token Inside

A routine cleaning uncovered a lunch-related object in a mechanism that does not eat lunch.

Sunday Clock Cleaning Stops When Clockmaker Finds Someone’s Sandwich Token Inside

A Bell Street clockmaker paused routine cleaning of a public corridor clock after finding a small brass sandwich token behind the minute wheel. The token is issued by a nearby workers’ tea room and has no mechanical purpose.

Nobody knows how long it has been inside. The clock has run three minutes slow for several weeks, although the clockmaker refuses to blame the token without evidence. Two tea-room regulars have already tried to claim it by saying they once lost a token “near a clock.” This description has been judged insufficient.

The token has been removed and the mechanism cleaned. The clock is now keeping correct time. Bell Street workers are invited to claim the token by identifying the stamped number. The clockmaker would also like everyone to stop asking whether the clock was hungry.
