Dense morning fog covered the South Canal and hid the far end of the Iron Footbridge today. The bridge remained open, but attendants used the installed hand-bell system to indicate when the narrow centre section was clear.
The system worked exactly as designed. This surprised several residents who had apparently assumed municipal equipment only becomes interesting when it fails. One man waited for a second bell because the first seemed “too straightforward.” The attendant rang again, less politely.
Visibility improved before ten. No delays or incidents were reported. City Engineering has asked the Gazette to note that equipment functioning normally is also newsworthy. We have noted it.
