A mechanical delivery cart returned to service today after receiving a new wheel bearing and bell linkage. The bell is meant to sound when the cart slows sharply or approaches a blind corner. During the test route, it also rang at three puddles.
Engineers found that a loose sensor arm was moving whenever the front wheel dipped. The cart therefore announced each puddle with the same urgency normally reserved for intersections. Pedestrians stepped aside respectfully. One child saluted.
The sensor has been adjusted and the bell now activates only under the intended conditions. The cart passed the same puddles in silence during the second test. The child appeared disappointed.
