The brass number 8 reported in Classifieds has been claimed by a resident of Market Lane. The owner correctly identified the mounting holes, street and missing neighbour number, and the plate has been returned.
During the two days without it, the house briefly appeared to be No. 3 from certain angles because the remaining screw shadow resembled a smaller numeral. Two visitors knocked at the wrong door. One was selling brushes. The other simply admired the masonry and has not explained why an address mattered.
The number has been refitted with new screws. The neighbouring household has checked its own number out of caution. The Gazette Classifieds Desk considers the matter closed, unless No. 6 goes missing.
