The Central Postal Office replaced a wooden sorting shelf today after staff discovered the small card reading TEMPORARY had been attached since 2018. The shelf itself remained solid and had performed daily service without complaint.
Records suggest the shelf was installed while a metal unit was being repaired. The metal unit was later moved elsewhere, and the temporary shelf stayed. Gobbs reportedly asked whether eight years of temporary use required a retrospective extension form. The answer was carefully avoided.
A new fitted shelf has now been installed. The old wooden unit will move to archives storage, where it has been labelled PERMANENTLY RETIRED. Several postal workers consider this unnecessarily provocative.
