A supervised measurement exercise produced useful numbers and several wounded adult egos.

School Science Club Measures Steam Vent and Discovers Adults Give Worse Estimates

The East School science club visited a safe public steam vent today with a teacher and City Engineering supervisor. Students measured surface temperature, plume height and the distance at which visible condensation disappeared.

Before the instruments came out, nearby adults were asked to estimate the plume height. Answers ranged from two metres to “about a house.” The students measured 4.3 metres under the morning conditions. One adult argued that the house he imagined was approximately that height.

The exercise ended without incident and the data will be used in a classroom graphing lesson. City Engineering praised the students for not touching any valves. The students praised City Engineering for bringing a measuring tape longer than the teacher’s.
