The city’s neatest autumn leaves survived judging but not the journey home.

Sunday Garden Society Holds Leaf Competition; Wind Becomes Unofficial Judge

The Ventorn Garden Society held its annual autumn leaf table in Glasshouse Court today. Entries were judged for colour, shape and lack of holes. The winning red maple leaf received a small blue ribbon.

A gust of wind arrived during the closing remarks and lifted seven entries from the table. Volunteers recovered six. The winning leaf travelled across the courtyard, circled a fountain and landed inside an open umbrella. The umbrella owner returned it after confirming he had not entered the competition.

The leaf has been pressed safely between two sheets of card. Next year’s rules may include weights for outdoor displays. The Society insists this will not constitute performance enhancement.
