A workshop apprentice left for lunch yesterday after mistaking a municipal warning-bell test for the midday meal signal. He put down his tools, collected his coat and departed with remarkable efficiency. He returned twenty minutes later carrying a pastry. Nobody else had moved. The workshop owner described the incident as “educational.”
The pastry survived the misunderstanding and was eaten during the actual lunch break, giving the apprentice the rare experience of being early for one lunch and properly on time for another on the same day. His colleagues have described this as an efficiency record nobody intends to copy. The apprentice argued that both bells sounded “bell-shaped.”
City officials have reminded workshops that municipal signals use regulated patterns. The apprentice has volunteered to read the new signal guide. He has also been told that future lunch breaks will be determined by the workshop clock. The clock is currently three minutes slow. The apprentice considers this a separate injustice.
