A bakery on Oven Court tested a new wheeled cooling rack this morning. The rack worked correctly until a narrow loaf on the lowest shelf slid through a wider-than-expected side gap during movement.
The loaf landed intact, rolled through the open doorway and travelled almost four metres down the sloped pavement. A customer stopped it with a shopping basket. The baker thanked her, inspected the loaf and removed it from sale on dignity grounds.
A small retaining rail has been added to the rack. The rescued loaf was cut for staff lunch. Bakery Court has returned to normal, although one apprentice has begun referring to the incident as the Great Escape.
