Bell Street disappeared this morning after a rooftop relief vent released a large cloud of warm steam into unusually still air. Visibility dropped to only a few steps. Shopkeepers pulled displays inside, pedestrians stopped at corners and one delivery driver walked into the same lamppost twice before deciding that the second collision proved the lamppost had moved.
One bakery remained open throughout. Its owner placed a chair in the doorway and began shouting, “Bread this way!” into the fog, initially to help people find the entrance. The arrangement became commercially successful almost at once. Three pedestrians who had intended only to cross the street followed the voice and emerged carrying loaves, while a fourth reached the bakery, bought a bun and then asked how to get back to where he had started.
Engineers say the relief vent operated correctly and the steam cleared after eight minutes. The bakery has reported its best morning sales of the week. Street Works has issued no new regulation, but officials suggest that during future low-visibility incidents residents should establish whether shouted directions lead to safety, a street corner or baked goods before following them.
