A loose brass number created a navigational disagreement between paper and metal.

Canal Lock Number Plate Reads 6 Upside Down; Two Maps Briefly Disagree

The brass number plate on South Canal Lock 6 loosened overnight and rotated halfway around. From the towpath it appeared to read 9. The lock itself remained Lock 6 and made no corresponding geographical movement.

Two delivery workers consulted a map, the plate and each other before deciding the map was probably more difficult to rotate by accident. Canal staff arrived shortly afterwards and restored the plate. One worker has asked whether Lock 9 should be inspected for sympathy.

All canal numbering has been checked along the central route. No other inverted locks were found. The two delivery workers reached their destination six minutes late and have blamed typography.
