The City Archive catalogued an eighty-year-old planning map today showing a short lane labelled Orchard Spur between Glasshouse Court and the old west wall. No later map contains the street, and no physical trace has been found.
Archivists believe the lane was proposed during a drainage redesign and removed before construction. This has not prevented residents from claiming grandparents who “definitely used it.” One man has already supplied a detailed memory despite being forty-two years old.
The map will be digitised with a note explaining that proposed streets are not evidence of completed streets. The Archive welcomes documentary material but asks residents to check family dates before submitting personal testimony.
