Night Workers Hear the Copper Street Knocking; New Rule Says Do Not Knock Back

Night workers near Copper Street have heard the repeating metallic knock again. This time they recorded three knocks, a pause and two knocks. One worker described the pattern as “interesting.” His colleague described it as “annoying.” The sound appeared to come from an older section of pipework beyond the active pressure network.

Engineers found no obvious fault. By breakfast, residents had proposed explanations including trapped machinery, an underground clock and “something with long arms.” The Engineering Office rejected all three. A monitoring gauge has been installed. Workers have been instructed to record the time and number of knocks if they return.

They have also been instructed not to knock back. The second instruction was added because somebody did. The reply contained four knocks. The worker responsible has been reassigned to a section containing fewer mysteries and more paperwork. The Gazette will continue investigating from above ground, where the sandwiches are.
