Delivery Tube No. 4 has been closed for routine inspection. The Postal Service insists the closure is unrelated to last week’s discovery of a biscuit crumb inside a message capsule. Nobody believes them. The tube normally carries lightweight documents between two central sorting points.
Food is strictly prohibited. Postal staff have therefore identified three possibilities: One: somebody ate a biscuit near an open capsule. Two: somebody sent a biscuit through the tube. Three: the tube has developed eating habits. Engineers have rejected possibility three.
Gobbs, who was not asked, said rejecting it “this early in the investigation” was irresponsible. Traffic has been redirected through Tubes 2 and 5. The crumb is being kept in an envelope labelled EVIDENCE. Someone has drawn a biscuit on the envelope.
