A Copper Market trader advertised a new range of left-handed screwdrivers today. Customers gathered. Several asked what made them left-handed. The trader explained that they were placed in the left-hand box. The right-hand box contained right-handed screwdrivers. The tools are otherwise identical. One customer accused the trader of dishonesty.
Another bought two left-handed screwdrivers “just in case.” A child solved the dispute by picking up one screwdriver from each box and switching hands. The demonstration was widely regarded as successful, except by the customer who had already paid extra for two ‘specialist’ left-handed models. A market inspector examined both boxes.
The screwdrivers are standard tools and legal to sell. The signs are technically not false because the left-handed screwdrivers are, in fact, on the left. The inspector has requested clearer labelling. The trader has replaced the signs. They now read: “LEFT BOX SCREWDRIVERS” and “OTHER SCREWDRIVERS.” Sales have increased.
