A cobbler near Workshop Alley demonstrated a self-tightening mechanical boot yesterday. The boot was designed to adjust its own straps. It did. A small spring then engaged. The boot took one step. Then another. The cobbler said: “That is new.” The boot continued across the workshop.
The boot’s brief journey was watched by enough customers that the cobbler has received two orders for pairs that can walk themselves home. He has refused both until he understands why the first one tried to leave before being paid for. Customers moved aside. The cobbler followed. The boot reached the doorway before being caught under a chair.
No one was injured. The prototype has been returned to the workbench. The cobbler insists it is not a walking boot. Witnesses have requested a more accurate description. The second boot has not been activated. It is being kept on a high shelf, which everybody agrees is probably unnecessary but reassuring.
