The autumn cleaning programme has confirmed that scarves are larger than expected debris.

Mechanical Street Sweeper Collects Twelve Leaves and One Entire Scarf

A small mechanical street sweeper operating near Glasshouse Court stopped automatically this morning after its intake roller jammed. Workers expected a branch. They found a long knitted scarf.

The scarf belonged to a cyclist who had stopped nearby and placed it on a bench. Wind carried one end into the roadway, where the sweeper collected it with twelve leaves and impressive determination. The machine’s safety clutch prevented damage.

The scarf has been returned, slightly dusty but intact. The sweeper resumed service after inspection. Street Works recommends keeping loose clothing away from cleaning machinery, even when the machinery appears polite.
