Missing Mechanical Postal Bird Returns After Six Days and Resumes Work Without Explanation

A missing copper Postal Service bird has returned intact after six days, with an empty letter cylinder and a route record that explains almost nothing.

Missing mechanical postal bird returns after six days and resumes work without explanation

A mechanical Postal Service bird reported missing six days ago returned to its station shortly before the first sorting bell this morning. The copper machine landed on its usual rail, locked its metal feet into place and presented its empty letter cylinder for unloading as though it had completed an entirely ordinary route. It had not. The bird had been absent for six days and nobody at the station had assigned it a route home.

Technicians disconnected the drive and inspected the wing joints, route spindle, leg clamps and outer panels. Apart from dust, a fresh scrape along one side and a short length of grey thread caught in the harness, the machine appeared operational. Its route drum contained several normal station marks, followed by a gap that has so far proved useless. A senior clerk asked where the bird had been. One technician reminded him that the mechanism was not designed to answer questions. The clerk replied that this had not stopped anyone from asking.

The bird has been removed from service while engineers examine the route assembly more closely. Twice, when the outgoing signal sounded, it attempted to engage its wing drive and rejoin the morning dispatch until technicians isolated the mechanism completely. The preliminary report lists its condition as “operational; movements unexplained.” The Postal Service considers this technically accurate and emotionally unsatisfying.
