The Central Postal Office received a parcel this morning marked: “THIS SIDE UP.” Four arrows supported the instruction. The parcel arrived upside down. Postal workers immediately checked the contents. Inside were six metal cups. Nothing was damaged. The sender later explained that the cups were packed specifically because “nothing could happen to them.”
The sender later seemed disappointed rather than embarrassed, explaining that the label had been a test of postal obedience. A clerk pointed out that the cups arrived safely, which the sender accepted as proof that the experiment had succeeded in the wrong direction. A clerk asked why the parcel had then been marked THIS SIDE UP.
The sender replied: “To see if it worked.” The Postal Service has recorded the result as: “It did not.” The parcel has been turned upright. It is now waiting for collection. A fifth arrow has been added by a postal worker. It points in every direction.
