The Central Postal Office installed a wooden size-check frame beside the parcel counter today. Packages that pass through the frame qualify for the standard small-parcel rate, assuming weight and contents are also acceptable.
The first difficult customer arrived with a box that missed the frame by two centimetres. While the clerk explained the larger rate, the customer removed his broad hat and absent-mindedly passed it through the frame. It fit perfectly. Nobody involved found this information useful.
The parcel was accepted at the correct rate. The hat left with its owner and has not been entered into the postal system. A small note has been added beside the frame explaining that personal clothing is not improved by successful measurement.
