Saturday Market Opens Pumpkin Row; One Pumpkin Requires Its Own Cart

Autumn produce has reached a scale that is beginning to affect local transport.

Saturday Market Opens Pumpkin Row; One Pumpkin Requires Its Own Cart

Copper Market opened Pumpkin Row today with thirteen growers and enough orange produce to make the north aisle difficult to ignore. Most pumpkins arrived in baskets. One arrived alone on a reinforced handcart.

The grower says the pumpkin weighs more than his youngest apprentice and less than his oldest apprentice, which officials have explained is not an approved unit. A certified market scale will be used before judging. Meanwhile, shoppers keep asking whether the pumpkin is hollow. The grower has become defensive.

The competition takes place this afternoon. Market staff have widened the display space and asked visitors not to sit on entries for photographs. One child has already asked whether the giant pumpkin counts as public seating.
