Tea Room Offers Fog Discount; Customers Ask How Fog Is Measured

A simple weather promotion became an argument about visibility, cups and commercial meteorology.

Tea Room Offers Fog Discount; Customers Ask How Fog Is Measured

A tea room near the South Canal offered a one-coin fog discount this morning while the opposite bank was difficult to see. The owner wrote the offer before opening and expected the fog to last perhaps an hour.

Customers immediately asked what level of fog qualified. Could they still receive the discount if they could see the bridge but not the clock? What if they sat by the window and breathed on the glass? One customer produced a pocket ruler. The owner regretted the entire concept by 9:20.

The discount ended when the far warehouse roof became visible. The owner has announced tomorrow’s offer will be based on something measurable, possibly the day of the week. One customer has asked whether Tuesday can be independently verified.
